Dua Before Leaving Home for Umrah

Before starting the journey, it’s Sunnah to recite a dua of reliance on Allah and protection during travel.

Arabic: بِسْمِ اللهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ

Transliteration: Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘ala Allah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.

Meaning: I begin in the name of Allah; I place my trust in Allah. There is no power or strength except with Allah.

Dua for Boarding Transport

Transliteration: Subhanal-ladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila rabbina lamunqalibun.

Meaning: Glory to the One who has subjected this to us, and we could never have done it by ourselves. Surely to our Lord we will return.

As you near Makkah and the Haram, seek Allah’s protection.

Arabic: أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

Transliteration: A’udhu bikalimatillahi at-tammati min sharri ma khalaq.

Meaning: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.

Niyyah (Intention) for Ihram

Before entering the state of Ihram at the Miqat, declare your intention for Umrah sincerely in your heart, then say aloud:

Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ عُمْرَةً

Transliteration: Allahumma labbayka ‘umrah.

Meaning: O Allah, I respond to Your call to perform Umrah.

Alternative (longer form):

Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُرِيدُ الْعُمْرَةَ فَيَسِّرْهَا لِي وَتَقَبَّلْهَا مِنِّي

Transliteration: Allahumma inni uridu al-‘umrata fa-yassirha li wa taqabbalha minni.

Meaning: O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah, so make it easy for me and accept it from me.

Talbiyah – Recited Until Tawaf Begins

The Talbiyah is the signature declaration of every pilgrim. Recite it continuously and aloud (for men) from the moment of Ihram until you begin Tawaf.

Arabic: لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ

Transliteration: Labbayka Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk, innal hamda wan-ni’mata laka wal mulk, la sharika lak.

Meaning: Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Indeed all praise, grace, and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.

Dua for Entering Masjid al-Haram

Enter with your right foot and recite:

Arabic: بِسْمِ اللهِ، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، وَالصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِ اللهِ، اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذُنُوبِي وَافْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ

Transliteration: Bismillah, wal hamdu lillah, was-salatu was-salamu ‘ala Rasulillah. Allahumma-ghfir li dhunubi waftah li abwaba rahmatik.

Meaning: In the name of Allah, all praise is for Allah, blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, forgive me my sins and open for me the doors of Your mercy.

Dua on First Sight of the Ka’bah

The first sight of the Ka’bah is a moment when duas are widely believed to be accepted, so take time to make personal supplications here as well.

Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ زِدْ هَٰذَا الْبَيْتَ تَشْرِيفًا وَتَعْظِيمًا وَتَكْرِيمًا وَمَهَابَةً

Transliteration: Allahumma zid hadha al-bayta tashrifan wa ta’ziman wa takriman wa mahabah.

Meaning: O Allah, increase this House in honour, greatness, dignity, and reverence.

Tawaf always begins level with the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad).

Arabic: بِسْمِ اللهِ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، وَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْدُ

Transliteration: Bismillah, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil hamd.

Meaning: In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest, and all praise is for Allah.

Dua During Tawaf (Rukn Yamani to Hajar al-Aswad)

There is no fixed dua for the rest of the Tawaf circuits – you may recite Qur’an, dhikr, or personal duas in any language. However, between the Yemeni Corner (Rukn Yamani) and the Black Stone, it is Sunnah to recite this well-known supplication, repeated every round:

Arabic: رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Transliteration: Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah wa qina ‘adhaban-nar.

Meaning: Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Dua After Tawaf at Maqam Ibrahim

After completing seven circuits, pray two rak’ahs near Maqam Ibrahim (if possible), then recite:

Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِنَ التَّوَّابِينَ وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنَ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ

Transliteration: Allahumma-j’alni minat-tawwabina waj’alni minal mutatahhirin.

Meaning: O Allah, make me among those who constantly repent and among those who purify themselves.

Dua While Drinking Zamzam Water

Whatever sincere intention you make while drinking Zamzam is said to be fulfilled by Allah’s permission. Face the Ka’bah while drinking and recite:

Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا وَرِزْقًا وَاسِعًا وَشِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ

Transliteration: Allahumma inni as’aluka ‘ilman nafi’an, wa rizqan wasi’an, wa shifa’an min kulli da’.

Meaning: O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, abundant provision, and healing from every illness.

Sa’i Duas – Safa and Marwah

Begin Sa’i by reciting the Qur’anic verse as you approach Safa:

Arabic: إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِنْ شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ

Transliteration: Inna as-Safa wal-Marwata min sha’a’irillah.

Meaning: Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah.

At the top of Safa and Marwah, face the Ka’bah and recite:

Arabic: اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ… أَنْجَزَ وَعْدَهُ

Transliteration: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illa Allahu wahdahu la sharika lah… anjaza wa’dah.

Meaning: Allah is the Greatest (x3). There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner… He fulfilled His promise and granted victory to His servant.

Between the rounds, you may also recite:

Arabic: رَبِّ اغْفِرْ وَارْحَمْ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْأَعَزُّ الْأَكْرَمُ

Transliteration: Rabbi-ghfir warham innaka antal a’azzul akram.

Meaning: My Lord, forgive and have mercy; indeed You are the Most Mighty, the Most Generous.

Dua for Halq / Taqsir (Shaving or Trimming)

After completing Sa’i, men shave (Halq) or trim (Taqsir) their hair; women trim a small portion. Recite:

Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِمَنْ حَلَقَ رَأْسَهُ

Transliteration: Allahumma-ghfir li wa liman halaqa ra’sah.

Meaning: O Allah, forgive me and forgive whoever shaved his head.

Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ

Transliteration: Allahumma taqabbal minna innaka antas-Sami’ul ‘Alim.

Meaning: O Allah, accept this from us; indeed You are the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
